Till date ads in Yahoo were ranked depending on the bid. This means higher you bid for a keyword, higher would be your ad ranking. This will be changed very soon now. Just like Google, Yahoo will also rank ads as per the bid and also the ad quality. For Google ad quality depends a lot on the landing page. This means Google has a mechanism where they check the relevance of the ad with the advertised page.

I am not sure if Yahoo will be looking the quality and relevance of the advertised page as well. Looking at the email I received here is what they mean by Ad Quality:

Ad quality is determined by:

1.       The ad’s historical performance - its click-through rate relative to competitors and normalised for position.

2.       The ad’s expected performance - determined by various relevance factors considered by Yahoo! Search Marketing’s ranking algorithms, relative to other ads displayed at the same time.

Overall ad quality is displayed in a graphical form by the quality index.

Still don’t get it? The picture below would be helpful:

Lot of webmasters and people who want to make money online get some idea about making money and quickly jump i to it. This generally is a bad practice and can end up giving you nothing but boredom. You normally get bored and move away from a website or blog of yours when its not making any kind of good money. The most important thing you need to do is ‘Research’. If you really wanna make some money, you have to be serious in your implementation plan. Research is the main key here.

I was recently reading an article on Jim Karter’s Blog where he talks about selecting a keyword for a website. Jim has definitely done a lot of research after which he has come to a conclusion where long tail keywords can be the key for your website’s success. I myself have been trying a bit in affiliate marketing and have been spending hours doing research on keywords, competition, Google’s search data etc. For a starter, a webmaster has to do lot of research in the niche, competition and his ability to share his own views in that niche to people’s interest. I cannot simply write a blog about loans just because someone said the keyword has high paying Google Ads.

Know your competitors:

Before jumping into something, do a lot of research on what competition due to have. If you are planning to start a website on iPhone, you need to search for terms related to iPhone on Google and check out the websites that rank high. You can check the quality and quantity of backlinks the website has. You need to then decide whether you can develop such backlinks. Will you able to spend as much as your competitor? If not, then try and look for some other niche where you have less competition, You obviously don’t want to land up in a ring of wrestlers who are experts and 5 times your weight.

Try and gather some revenue stats:

This is the most important but ignored part. Before starting a website in a nice, you need to check out the revenue generated by similar websites. This might not be a easy task but its not impossible as well. It is very much possible to find out what kind of income can be generated from a website with X amount of traffic. Some research on the revenue of websites in your niche can give you an idea as to how much you can make at the beginning and how much can the maximum profits go up to.

Know your visitors:

Knowing your visitors will definitely help you develop and advertise your website. You need to know your target audience in terms of their age, sex & geographic location. Your visitors will depend on the kind of content you have on your website. Having a website specific to a group and/or location helps a lot because you are not facing high competition. A website targeted to kids & teens can do well with PPC ads whereas a website targeted to people above 25 can do well with affiliate sales.

Apart from these major factors there are things like what hosting to go for, the physical location of the server, the domain name. Some older posts of mine will be of a help in case you are looking for a brief idea on choosing other aspects for a website.
