I am not sure if most of readers know that I love using gadgets. I change my cellphone after 6 - 8 months. The new ones that come in market are trendy which always make me buy them. Around four months ago I purchased the HTC touch considering its ability for push email and the windows operating system. The start itself was very bad as the phone I bought would not get charged. had to replace it and wait for a week to get a new one. The issues kept on coming after which recently I switched to a Nokia e61i and the changes are amazing.

Following are some points you would consider if you are not able to decide among these 2 phones.

1.   Nokia e61i is a bit less expensive than the HTC touch.

2.   Typing is much easier on the Nokia. The touchpad on HTC is two small and cannot be used with fingers. It takes ages to type an email above 5 lines.

3.   Battery life is very bad on the HTC. Nokia is much more better.

4.   The Nokia e61i like every other Nokia phone is very user friendly.

5.   Calling is a problem in HTC. For e.g. I have dialled 986710000 a few hours ago and now I wanna dial 986711111…the phone will automatically display the old 986710000 and dials it if you are fast. You need to wait for a couple of seconds until the old number goes away. I used to call at least 2 wrong people everyday due to this issue.

6.   Resale value for a Nokia is much better. An HTC will not sell at a higher rate but a Nokia will as there are many Nokia buyers out there.

7. Nokia e61i is much faster than the HTC. This is due to the difference in operating system. HTC works on MS Windows and the Nokia e61i works on symbian.

To sum it up, I would think twice to go with windows phone once again. I have seen some cool HTC models and I personally feel that they should come up with some non-windows versions.

I made a post about having problems with my wireless router and how did I resolve a few months when I was not able to transfer or upload files using messenger or ftp. It has been a happy journey since then. I never felt the need of using MSN messenger until yesterday when I had to be in touch with a client in the US. My favorite messenger has always been Yahoo and I have been using GTalk and Skype lately.

Coming back to the point, I figured out that I was not able to sign in MSN messenger when I am connected using my wireless router. I was able to connect using the wired connection but the MSN messenger wont find a Internet connection on the wireless network. Did lot of research on the Internet but no website could help me. There are many websites which tell you to check if your system date is proper. My system date is proper and I am able to connect wired.

I came back to this post of mine and checked that all changes I had made are still as it is. Tried NAT but that did not work as well. Came back to the old MTU and changed it to 1432. This worked like charm. Now I am able to transfer files and connect to MSN messenger wireless. If any of you experts know why this happens and what exactly is MTU, please email me or post details in comments section. Quiet interested in knowing more about this.

Dlink routerRecently I purchased a D Link DI - 524 802.11g/2.4GHz Wireless Router for my home. This was purchased considering the option to be online from every corner of my house and be connected to my other laptop and desktop PC. The router was easy to install or maybe my experience working with SBC Global Yahoo made it simpler for me :p. Everything worked fine until my sister complained about she not being able to attach files on email using her laptop. As usual, I ignored her completely thinking that she is not so good when it comes to these devices.

One day later, I was trying to upload a few files over ftp and it wasn’t happening. I thought it must be the Internet connection and started writing a post on this blog. To my surprise I was getting a ‘page cannot be displayed’ error every time I tried to publish or save a post. I quickly wired my laptop to the router and it worked. I was pretty tensed now thinking that I would have to do this all time when I need to upload something or post on my blog.

I asked a few friends who use wireless routers. None of them were of any help. I did a lot of research on the Internet but that did not help me. I thought this router was a total waste of money and I should replace it when I found this person on wireless forums. This guy had replied to a worried person who had a similar issue like me. The resolution to this is very simple. Just go to your router by typing in the IP address in your browser (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Go to the WAN link and change the MTU value. I have it set to 1000 now and everything works like charm. I haven’t bothered about knowing what this exactly is but I will definitely find some more information and post it here. Hope this helps anyone who is facing issues with uploading or attaching files using a wireless router.

The iPhone mania

Lot of talk is going about the iPhone everywhere. Whenever I meet a person and we start talking about cellphones, the person says ‘I am waiting for the iPhone’. People here in India have gone crazy about the iPhone. Most of them do not even know what the iPhone is all about but they want to buy it just because everyone else says it’s the best phone and of course the price is also low. I have seen videos of the iPhone on the Internet and read about in magazines. At the beginning I was also a bit crazy about it but after a few reviews online I decided that I am settling for my Nokia 95.

Here is what Shoemoney had to say about the iPhone:

Shoemoney:

I know I know… its the greatest thing ever… I do think it looks very cool and hip but functionality wise… which unfortunately using it for business purposes is my main thing… its not adding any value. Sure if I was a teenager and wanted to show off to all my friends would I buy it? ABSOLUTELY. Heck it can probably even get you laid.
Its actually quite a downgrade from my Treo with EVDO on sprint. The network speeds are like 10x slower. The mail client (which I use all the time) lacks TONS of functionality. The web browser looks really neat but with weak caching and super slow Cingular network speeds.
I think apple is really good at INNOVATING things but they have a pretty piss poor track record when it comes to improving on already existing services.

Even Matt Cutts got this phone but did not have much to say about it. Not sure if he wants to stay on the SEO topic. Of course, the iPhone looks good has all the goodie goodie features, but what about battery life? Camera? Voice quality? User friendliness? Internet speed (My Nokia N95 beats everyone there)? There are lot of other factors for a cell phone to claim that it’s the best. I would read a lot of cellphones reviews on this page rather than going for an iPhone. Anyways, for all my Indian readers…The phone is not coming to India before late 2008. I am sure Nokia comes up with something better before that.

I have been facing this trouble since day one on my Nokia N95 phone. Whenever I try to start my camera, the Internet or any other application…it shows me a message that says “Memory full. Close some applications and try again“. I see a lot of people face this issue and think there is some fault in the phone which would be rectified in the next software release. Well, this is not true. This is not an error but a straight forward message that says you have some applications open…but you closed them, didn’t you? The truth is that the applications are still running in the background. OK! Now how do we close these applications when we don’t see them? Here is the trick. Remember this phone is so called “This is what computers have become” …and we have a task manager in our windows to see and kill processes running in the background. Similarly, the Nokia N95 has a task manager which shows what processes are running. To see the processes running the background all you have to do is hold the left side menu button for 2 seconds…as soon as you do that you will see the applications running the background. All you have to do is select the application and say “EXIT” to it. Now you dont have to do this all time and to avoid the “Memory full. Close some applications and try again” all you have to do is exit any application you open and not simply click the red button. This is a proper way for operating phones these days. Next time you get this message…you need not switch off your phone!!!

Vote for your Cell Phone

Yesterday I had a debate with my friends with the best and highest selling cell phones in world. Many of us said it is Nokia but a few of them had different views. The world cup is also over and I had to remove the poll. So here is the new poll. Please vote and let me know what is your current cell phone. If the one you use is not listed, please add the name in comments and I’ll add it to the list.

Use push email on Nokia N95

Yes!! This can be done. You can use push email on your Nokia N95 that too without paying for any service. I am sure this works on other phones as well but haven’t tried it. All you have to do is sign up for an email which provides imap service. I am currently using cortado which gives you free email account with imap. Here are the steps:

1. Sign up for a free account at Cortado.
2. Setup the settings on your phone as mentioned on cortado’s website.
3. On your phone goto ‘Messaging’ and select the cortado email box.
4. Connect to the mail box using your connection.
5. Let your phone retrieve the email and do not disconnect it,

Next time when you get an email, you will get a nice tone & thats it!!!

P.N - Disconnecting from the mailbox will not push email directly. Ensure that you are always connected to receive emails.

I have been waiting for this phone since long time and I have it now with me. I did mention about the Nokia N95 being available in Mumbai but that was without the Nokia warranty. The phone is now “officially” launched in Mumbai and can be bought at around Rs. 35,000 with 1 year warranty from Nokia. Ofcourse the phone is loaded with amazing features and some drawbacks.

Good Features:

1. Design is superb
2. Lot of applications like, adobe acrobat, office, lifeblog etc.
3. Cool browser to surf websites.
4. Scrollers turns into a mouse for browsing.
5. 3D Ringtones.
6. N Series themes.
7. Phone to speakers attachment.
8. 5 MP camera. (Best feature).
9. Amazing leather cover.

Drawbacks:

1. Slide is not as good as my Nokia 6280.
2. Volume using ear phones is not as good as other phones.

There are loads of more features in the phone which I am yet about to check. Will post more about it if possible.
