Till date ads in Yahoo were ranked depending on the bid. This means higher you bid for a keyword, higher would be your ad ranking. This will be changed very soon now. Just like Google, Yahoo will also rank ads as per the bid and also the ad quality. For Google ad quality depends a lot on the landing page. This means Google has a mechanism where they check the relevance of the ad with the advertised page.

I am not sure if Yahoo will be looking the quality and relevance of the advertised page as well. Looking at the email I received here is what they mean by Ad Quality:

Ad quality is determined by:

1.       The ad’s historical performance - its click-through rate relative to competitors and normalised for position.

2.       The ad’s expected performance - determined by various relevance factors considered by Yahoo! Search Marketing’s ranking algorithms, relative to other ads displayed at the same time.

Overall ad quality is displayed in a graphical form by the quality index.

Still don’t get it? The picture below would be helpful:

IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition

Few days ago I got an email to check out this tool released by IBM & Yahoo! This tool is similar to Google Mini which costs around USD 2000. Yahoo & IBM have released this tool for free download which is very useful for enterprises to search documents.

I downloaded this tool and am in the process of integrating it with my company’s portal. Since I am on a windows XP machine, I downloaded the windows version of the tool. It is very easy to install it like any software. Just a few clicks and you are ready to go. Once installed, it will directly open your control panel (that’s what I call it) in your browser. All you have to do is tell the tool to crawl directories on your PC and include websites if wanted in the search. Yahoo & IBM are in a process of scheduling this crawl which would be an add-on for this tool.

I had about 3K documents on a particular directory which was crawled by the tool. The most amazing feature is that it will also search for words inside the document. So for e.g. Someone in my organization uploads a document which is MOM for a meeting held on 22nd of December and names the file as MOM.doc. It would be almost impossible to search for this document on my portal. A person wanting this document would have to download and open every document uploaded as it is not being named correctly. IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition works smart here. With this tool I can imagine some words or a phrase which would be in a document….something like “22″ “December” and the tool will find the right document for me by searching inside the files. This works in a similar fashion for PDF files as well. All in all a very vital tool to be used where you have large no. of documents. Infact I am using it at my home to search for documents containing specific words.

Yahoo! Search Index Update

Yahoo! Search has updated it’s index. As mentioned in their blog, it seems there would be lot of changes in site rankings & indexed pages for a site. I’ve checked on my keywords and do not see any changes yet. As usual all sites included in the Yahoo directory rank high.
