Top mistakes webmasters make

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I have come across a lot of people getting into website business nowadays. These guys are really excited and think they are quite lucky to find the “easy way” to make money online. Thanks to programs like Google AdSense, every person now wants to make money using websites. Well, it might be easy to make money from websites BUT not for long. If you really want to earn good money for lifetime then you need to think twice before doing things. In this article I will discuss some common mistakes new webmasters do. Lot of these mistakes were committed by myself and I hope others wont follow it. I might explain every point in lot detail maybe in future posts.

1. Never choose an irrelevant domain name. Lot of people would like to name their first website with their own name when it has nothing to do with them. I have seen lot of guys buy domain name like yourname.com when the site talks about cell phones. Same site would get lot of traffic if the domain itself is relevant to the topic.

2. Lot of webmasters choose to have multiple sites. I have seen people telling me that they are planning to make 100 websites and each website will atleast get a dollar per day. That makes $100 per day…This might sound good but its not easy to maintain all the 100 sites.

3. Stick to one website. Give your 100% to your only website. By doing this you are investing good on a single resource which makes lot of sense. Lot of top earners from websites are doing it with a single website.

4. Chose the right topic for your website. Don’t make a website on cancer because someone told you the keyword “cancer” gives you $20 per click and you know nothing about it. Stick to a topic you are familiar with. After you chose the topic try to break it and chose something inside it. For E.g. You chose to make a site on cell phones. Try to make a site on Nokia Cell.

5. Don’t look at or listen to what others are earning. Lot of people lie by saying that they are earning some amount just from AdSense…this leads to you following some stupid illegal things to earn more money. This will result in getting banned by AdSense or any other program you are using.

6. Don’t fill your site with ads all around. This looks very bad and will drive your visitors away.

7. Don’t create a replica of any other site. This also means you should not steal content from any other sites.

8. If your site is penalized by Google or another search engines don’t simply sell your site or dump it. Try to find out why the site is penalized. Google will tell you why its banned and might unban it if you apply for a reinclusion request.

9. Never give out your website in public. If you think you need a review then ask a friend or relative to have a look at this interesting website you found. Don’t tell them its yours and don’t keep on asking them about it. Just take a normal review as if it doesn’t matter to you much

10. Never expect something very great to happen. There is nothing in this world that can make you earn lots of money without hard work. Just wait and watch…set your goals..do your bit and you will definitely achieve them.

11. Many people make blogs and write about themselves or what they did last night. No one is happy to read that stuff so please don’t waste time on doing it. People come to the Internet to gain knowledge, to know some stuff…give them that.

12. Never depend on income from a single network. Keep 2-3 programs with you so that even if one fails you can go with another one.

13. Lot of webmasters worry about keywords which results in unnecessary stuffing of keywords in your site. Just write what you want…don’t worry about keywords.

14. Keep that nice little idea with yourself which is helping you in making money from your website. Such tricks are not supposed to be made public.

Sticking to one web site is a bad idea. Certainly, start by devoting your efforts to just one… but once the first one is established, it’s a good idea to create more sites, perhaps in a related niche. If you’re counting on income from your sites (be it from ads, selling stuff, whatever) and have, say, three decently producing sites, you’ll survive if one of them drops off the face of Google.

Totally agree with you Kevin. You can definetely go for more sites when you have your 1st site ‘established’ and are earning quite well from it. What I mean in the article is that one should not start with making alot of sites…that maybe a call for trouble. Also,
you need to be a proper judge to consider your site as established.
