Use Chat Messenger at work and School

It is seen that almost all the messengers like Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Google Talk etc. are blocked at work and schools. I feel these messengers can also be used for something official at work. For e.g Getting solution from a friend who works in a different company. I have observed that people don’t care or take that extra step to try and work things out. My favourite messenger is Yahoo messenger and I ensure that I am connected to it on every PC or laptop I sit on. Almost all schools, colleges and offices are connected via a firewall and proxy…If you have the messenger installed and its not connecting you can try and change the connection settings. To do this you have to go to Messenger > Preferences > Connection…On this screen select the option that says “Firewall with no proxies”, click apply and try to login. This method works most of the times, if it does not work then go back to the connection screen and select the option that says use proxies…once you select this you will find options to either enable Http proxy or the Socks proxy. Most of the schools, colleges and offices use http proxy so all you have to do now is enter the http proxy…this proxy can be obtained from your browser by going to Tools > Internet Options > Connection > LAN Settings…Now back on your messenger enter this IP with its port and you should be able to connect. If this does not work then you can use the Socks proxy option…socks proxies can be obtained from the Internet and used.

If none of the above options work for you and there is no Yahoo messenger installed then there are other alternatives. For Yahoo you can try using the Yahoo Web Messenger or you can use other websites to login. These websites also provide login options for other messengers…some of the few sites which you can use to chat where your messenger is blocked are snimmer.com, ebuddy.com & meebo.com.
